Butterfly weed is botanically known as Asclepias tuberosa. You may also hear it called Indian Paintbrush. Asclepias is native to the eastern regions of North America and can be grown as a perennial in Colorado. Being a member of the Milkweed family... Asclepias is known to bleed white sap. Dipping freshly cut stems in hot water should stop the bleeding.

Butterfly weed is considered a medium filler flower with a vase life of 3 to 7 days depending on environmental conditions.
