Solidago
is also known as "Golden Rod" and mistakenly called
Solidaster. Solidaster is a hybrid cross of Solidago canadensis
and Aster ptarmiciodes... which has larger flowers than the
Solidago commonly used in the floral trade.
Mardi Gras Solidago starts its
life at the farm just like any other Solidago, except to produce
"Mardi Gras" the plants are cut back. This forces the
plant to produce several long lateral shoots off the main stem. A
bunch of "Mardi Gras" Solidago only has five major
stems, but each major stem has four or five laterals yielding 20 useable
stems per bunch. "Mardi Gras" products cost a bit more
per bunch than regular Solidago but offer the retail florist an
additional ten stems which makes this product an exceptional buy.
Vase life is good with
Solidago stems lasting 7 to 10 days depending on bud stage and
environmental conditions.
